Match-on-action is an editing technique where the editor will cut from one shot to another shot that matches the first. Even if two shots have been filmes at completely different times, match-on-action will give the impression of continuous time.
Match-on-action is what the audience expect to see, for example, if you see someone stood outside a door, you expect to see them walk through the door. (see the image below.)
